Commercial Risk Analyst

The Role

Working within the Commercial Services department and reporting into the Head of Commercial Operations, the Commercial Risk Analyst will lead in the analysis of future Sales pipeline, specific complex or large opportunities / contracts and will advise and report to the Finance team and the wider business.

The Commercial Risk Analyst will work closely with customer engagement teams to assess, financially model, plan and report on customer opportunities, contracts and methods of payment funding options, covering net and gross profitability and cashflow forecasting.

This is a key decision-making role for CAE in assessing and managing specific opportunities and managing their financial impact to the company.

What you will be doing?

Your main responsibilities will include;

  • Partnering with Sales Management and the Treasury Manager to review and interpret the impact of the sales pipeline on company financial modelling including revenue recognition, cashflow and future forecasting
  • Work as part of the customer engagement teams in assessing and modelling different financial methods to support specific contracts or opportunities; these could cover:
    • Capex, Lease, AOR, or trading in foreign currencies for locally delivered services
  • Calculating net profitability on specific opportunities or contracts over the whole contract period
  • Modelling cashflow on specific opportunities tied to chosen payment options for opportunities / contracts
  • Working with Services, Operations and Sales, to develop profit development plans for multiyear / multistage contracts
  • Advise in the win strategy for key bids / opportunities based on financial models
  • Reporting to the Finance team on revenue recognition and EBITDA calculations for specific opportunities
  • Understand and advise on impact of currency fluctuations, and support the hedging process
  • Apply knowledge of international sales, tax and regional accounting for accurate reporting and to identify risk and opportunities to CAE
  • Work with internal sales teams to ensure accurate system records and consult with the accounting team on the revenue recognition
  • Have the aptitude to learn and keep abreast of the changing technology and be able to assess and advise on appropriate accounting methods
  • Consider potential operational impact of forthcoming deals on the Finance team and communicate as necessary
  • Provide data-driven insights to senior stakeholders
  • Assist with ad hoc wor

What is needed?

  • Experienced commercial analyst with strong financial knowledge, versed in accounting principles & practice
  • Is happy to be engaged with customers (as part of a team) to model different financial vehicles and explain their features and benefits as part of the customer engagement process
  • Has knowledge of working in different currencies and has some exposure to implications of tax in different global territories (this would be supported by the Finance team)
  • Can financially model a whole contract / opportunity lifecycle including gross and net profitability, revenue recognition and cash flow modelling and reporting
  • Confident and articulate, happy to engage across multiple teams and with customers / suppliers
  • High performing individual with solid career progression
  • Logical and methodical with attention to detail


  • Has worked in a financial analyst role in a commercial focused business, that can take the lead in assessing opportunities and situations and driving outcomes across teams
  • Has worked in a customer facing role advising on financial vehicles or products
  • Positive, confident, “glass is half full” personality
  • Good ‘soft skills’ and emotional intelligence
  • Conscientious, flexible, hands-on and the ability to work to deadlines
